At Nanaksar Primary School we strive to provide a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum for all our pupils. The curriculum will be planned to be responsive to the cultural backgrounds and needs of the pupils and resources will be directed to support pupil progress.
In the Early Years pupils pursue the seven areas of learning, namely the three prime areas,
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language.
Further support to strengthen the prime areas is provided specifically through,
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design.
We recognise that parents are central to a child’s well-being and parents will therefore be encouraged to participate in their child’s’ early learning through pre-school home visits and initiatives like ‘Stay and Play’ sessions. Pupils in the EYFS are encouraged to learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. The promotion of Literacy will be prominent in the Early Years curriculum to lay a secure foundation for future learning. We will provide purposeful play with an appropriate balance of teacher directed and child initiated activities. Bilingual teachers and LSAs will provide a challenging and enjoyable programme of intensive learning and development. By the end of the Foundation Stage we aim for all pupils to achieve a Good Level of Development, achieving at least an ‘expected’ judgement in line with the Early Learning Goal Descriptors.

Key Stage 1 and 2
We intend to meet the high expectations of the new National Curriculum, launched in September 2014. Our curriculum ensures that our pupils’ learning is meaningful and benefits from a specific focus on the core requirements of the English and Mathematics curriculum. The changes to the curriculum have provided teaching staff with the opportunity to incorporate challenge and high expectations within the framework, starting from Year 1 and developing year on year.
Further details about the National Curriculum can be found here:
Pupils in Year 1 to Year 6 are to be taught in line with National Curriculum objectives. They are taught the ‘core’ subjects of English and Mathematics. The ‘Foundation’ subjects of Science, History, Geography, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Computing and Physical Education are taught through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The IPC focuses on a combination of academic, personal, and international learning for pupils, combined with innovative, exciting, engaging and ‘real’ ways of learning. The IPC has been selected because it develops knowledge and skills as well as broadening cultural awareness with an international dimension. Given the likely diversity of cultures in our pupil cohort, the IPC will better meet their learning needs.
We ensure that pupils become confident and competent users of the English language, which is fundamental in helping them to be successful in achieving high standards in all areas of the curriculum.
Phonics & Reading
At Nanaksar Primary School we follow the Letters and Sounds phonics programme, incorporating Jolly Phonics actions and jingles. Reading schemes include Jelly and Bean, Rigby Star and Collins Big Cat.
In Year 1, pupils take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. The check comprises a list of 40 words and non-words which the child will read one-to-one with a teacher. The phonics check will help teachers identify pupils who need additional support so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2.

The DfE have reinforced the need
to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
At Nanaksar Primary School, these values are embedded through our school ethos and values and taught through PSHCE and our multi-faith lessons, ‘Our World’ and ‘Let’s Celebrate.’ We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
